Project History

Torben Ulrich, a Seattle resident for 27 years before moving to the Bay Area in 2010, initiated this project, Cacophony for 8 Players, with Baldoz and Graczyk in 2011 as a way to deepen and expand their ongoing artistic conversation, which draws on Ulrich’s vast knowledge and experience. It actively seeks to uncover the nature of influence, through reading, discussing and generating scores that both align with the past and actively rebel against it. Through this cyclical practice, the larger goal is to use history as a point of tension to press up against in defining one’s own individual artistic voice.

Short forms of the project were first seen as works in progress at Northwest New Works Festival at On The Boards in Seattle in 2012, and at the Conduit Dance+ Festival in Portland in 2013.
